Orlam Rolfsom, Journal Entry # 12: Save Kh'ong

Some rich turd got the stupid idea in his head that he deserves to get famous by slaughtering a key part of the Servos ecosystem, the Great Ape Kh'ong. Kh'ong is a great might beast who roams the deepest regions of the Servos. This supposed great hunter Ralc Dheman led his entourage into the jungle... and by led, I mean "led them to their slaughter". Of the porters and servants he brought into the jungle, I know of only one that survived, and that no thanks to the useless ass who brayed about his mighty hunting abilities. He brought a handful of hired guards with him, which he used exclusively to save his own hide as well, and I have little doubt he would have left them to die as well if it served his purpose.

Understandably, those who don't have their heads shoved so far up their nether regions weren't excited about Kh'ong being slain, either. We had literally just been given a reminder of our need to respect the Servos, and Kh'ong himself had been a necessary part of the process of providing medicine to halt a recent plague. This consortium of concerned citizens gathered forces and sent us out to have a word with the buffoon... myself, Strata, Dale, R'edtarian, and Truck volunteered our efforts to disrupt his plans.

Unfortunately, we were a few days behind at the beginning, but more fortunately for a scout he is quite terrible at leading people through the jungle. We were gaining ground on him and his entourage, who were about as subtle about their passage through the jungle as a herd of dyre during mating season. It turns out we weren't the only ones to go looking for him, either; we found evidence that some of the locals weren't too excited to see him either. It looked to us like they were finding ways to lure the local wildlife into tearing into the so-called adventurers, and the unarmoured servants were dropping like flies. The further we went, the more dead we found, with never so much as a hint that the bastard had done anything to send them on their way to Death's realm.

By the time we caught up to him, there wasn't much left of his group. Just him and his guards, and a bunch of nets and poison so that he could no doubt poison the legendary peaceful creature and then claim he had slain it in fierce battle, the spineless wretch (may his entrails feed the birds). We had intended to smash their cask of poison to spoil their plans, when they attacked us. I suppose if we had been a little more stealthy we might have settled things much more peacefully. They were in the end no match for us, and since the only reason anyone would follow such scum is that they were being payed for it, they abandoned him as soon as it became obvious they were at risk of anything. Ralc himself ran off into the jungle, alone; his guards we were willing to escort out, and I dare say they won't be in any rush to follow such a slimy worm of a man again any time soon, though I am sure he'll find others willing to take his money (assuming he makes it back, which he probably will... his ilk are ever slippery).

I had to bargain for the life of the one servant we were able to find alive. Ralc and his goons had abandoned them to their fate at the hands of the local tribefolk in the jungle, but I was able to save his life by trading the fine cloak I had won in battle from a bandit years ago. A shame, that, but I couldn't just leave the poor fellow to die. Ralc, on the other hand, well... I probably wouldn't go so far as to shove him off a cliff, but I don't think I'd lift a hand to save him if he was thrown off a cliff by a 50 foot tall ape.

Summary:
Ralc Dheman's hunting expedition has been ended before it could do any harm. Most of the skilled fighters survived, and Ralc escaped into the Servos - his fate remains unknown, though if he lives, he most certainly harbors a grudge. Many of the bearers and beaters are dead at the hands of a previously unmet group of Humans who seem to have been living in the Servos this entire time. They were satisfied by the party's commitment to natural harmony, and also Orlam's fine silk cloak, and let the last bearer go.

You are reading the writings of Truck of the Deep Servos, Windling Warrior.

Self proclaimed "Renowned hunter" Ralc Dheman has declared his intention to slay the legendary ape, Kh'ong, in the Servos Jungle. I have seen Kh'ong before, he is a magnificently massive ape, taller than most buildings.  Conservationists in Throal feel this largely peaceful, if enormous, ape is one of the great wonders of Barsaive, and necessary to the elemental and spiritual balance of the Servos. Like-minded Adepts rush off to thwart the hunting party and save Kh'ong. Kh'ong's range is not far from that of my tribe, so I felt this would be a good time to visit my tribe. We asked around and found that he had hired dozens of beaters and bearers as well as a few archers and swordsmen. We also heard that he bought a huge amount of poison, and rope.

We stopped in Ironbark Grove to resupply and check on Raic's passage, I had the pleasure of meeting Aethrillia Redwing, a local Beastmaster and famous naturalist. We learned that Ralc had not stopped in the grove, but that some of his hirelings had attempted to purchase some fresh supplies, but Aethrillia had run them out of town. In Ironbark grove I bought 6 riding goats and about 1200 pounds of goods, mostly ironmongery  (pots, pans, knives, hatchets, arrowheads, etc) and cloth goods you don't see much in the deep jungle, in the hope that I could deliver a bounty to my tribe.

We took the path to Griffin Falls, and by the time we crossed the river at the falls we were less than 4 days behind the party we were tracking.  That night during the dawn watch we noticed that one of the goats was gone. I did an Astral Sight and spotted a big Lizard Cat carrying a dying goat away. (Later, after discussing it we decided it was a Skulk). I immediately attacked it and got it to drop the goat, and ran it off with many wounds. In the meantime another of the Skulks shot it's tongue out a huge distance and entangled R'edtarian and started to drag him away. The others rescued R'edtarian and managed to drive that Skulk off.  We also came upon evidence that somebody was attacking the safari. Whomever it was seems to like throwing crude pots of scents that attracts certain animals (including Skulks).

Halfway through the third day we heard a commotion up ahead. We hid the goats and approached with stealth. We saw  Ralc Dheman arguing with his human male bodyguard and the female elvish trapper. One was saying that the mission was a failure, and that they should leave the Servos immediately. The other was saying that they ought to rescue the beaters and bearers that were being massacred by the natives a short run away to the north. Raic insisted that since he had detected Kh'ong just a short skulk to the east, that now was the time to go poison him. Roic ended the argument by heading east, but then they seem to have noticed us and took cover.

We made a plan and started to advance on their position. They apparently had a better plan then us, because as soon as we started forward the two archers, whom we had not seen, fired into our flanks. The battle was short and unequal, One archer, and Roic fled. The other archer, the beastmaster, and our friend Daler were rendered unconscious. During the fight Strata broke the barrel of poison the bodyguard was carrying, so both of them were each coated with enough poison to knock out a 50 foot tall ape. they both ran out into the jungle fleeing or chasing, and then fell unconscious an inconvenient distance from everybody else. fortunately everybody eventually made a full recovery. The same could not be said of the beaters and bearers, who were mostly slaughtered by the jungle natives. Orlam went to treat with the natives and found that only one bearer was taken captive, but he persuaded them to release him to us.

We next went to my home village, which was only about one day away. I presented them with the goods I had brought, and the goats. I had a great homecoming, mared only by having to report that my cousin Mazor had died while adventuring out of Throal. After several days of feasting and celebration we returned to Throal.

From the journal of Strata, Throalic year 1425

A vain and greedy man decided to make a hunting trophy of one of the great spirits of the Servos, Kong. This Ralc Dhemon needs punching. Truck, Orlam, R’edtarian and Dale agreed. We left Throal.

In Ironbark Grove, Aethrilla the beastmaster pointed out where Ralc and his expedition went into the Servos; we thanked her.

We followed the trail of dead beaters and bearers Ralc left behind tearing up the Servos looking for the spirit. I gave the dead what last rights I could.

Great cat-lizards tried to eat R’edtarian one night. I punched them.

We caught up with Ralc’s guards. I punched the bodyguard carrying the barrel of poison they were going to use on Kong, so that Ralc could claim what a mighty hunter he was.

The mercenaries were not really loyal to Ralc, just to his purse. We punched them til they gave up. Ralc ran away.

I took a nice nap after being drenched in the poison that there were going to use on Kong.

Orlam rescued one of the surviving beaters; the others had been slain by the jungle natives.

On our way out, we rescued a couple of the mercs who had abandoned Ralc; Olopo and Oranga.

While the spirit likely did not need our help, it was good to run interference between Kong and the greedy, short sighted, vain git - Ralc. If I catch up with him again, I will punch him.
