Word reached Throal that there was a village in need of assistance. There were reports from outlying areas of recent encounters with the undead. The village responded by moving their livestock away from that area, and temporarily abandoning their crops until somebody could be found to deal with the problem. My most recent theatrical role had run its course, and I was once again both at loose ends, and in need of funds so joined a group responding to the plea. My companions were Garren, a fellow Illusionist (of the 2nd circle), Kayapo the windling Shaman (who was perhaps the most experienced among us), Eruriel the elven cavalier mounted upon her horse Bellerophon, and Kresh'Ktor a newly initiated T'Skrang Swordmaster.

We visited the village and learned what we could there, and set forth upon unmarked trails towards the area where the incidents had been. We had not traveled far when we were set upon (in broad daylight) by a pack of 8 hungry wolves. We theorized that the wolves must have recently been driven from their usual hunting range by the undead, and were desperate. Working like a well oiled machine, we slew about half the pack, including one of the two pack leaders before the rest fled. We skinned the dead wolves and sold the skins in Throal. Several of us suffered very nasty bites, and so Kayapo prepared and cast a Hero's Feast in which we all told tales of our exploit's (or in the case of Kresh'Ktor, exploits performed by his clan). I told the tale of the very strange events of the expedition to Kaer Bamor in which we recovered those remarkable manuscripts.

Early the next day we entered a small clearing that had some stones standing in the center. Looking around we spotted a cave entrance to the north, and on the far side of the clearing, 4 people had been nailed to trees by their wrists and feet! I had never heard of anything like it except in old tales of the cruelties of the Therian empire! Looking from across the clearing I could see movement, and thought that they were still alive. As we approached closer we could see that was less than half right, they were all 4 undead! Mindless cadaver men with half rotted flesh! We approached carefully and decided to put the 4 wretched things out of their misery (for despite their being undead, we could tell that they were still suffering from their impalements).

Kresh'Ktor took the first blow, which enraged the cadaver man so much that he howled as he tore himself off the tree. This set the other three also franticly trying to free themselves so they could attack us. Worse yet, more, many, many more started to slowly pour out of the cave. In the end I think there were more than a dozen. The fight was long and brutal. I cast Monstrous Mantel on our fighters (which number included the horse Bellerophon, and then started casting True Ethereal Bolts. The fight lasted so long that even Monstrous Mantel spells that had an extra success that extended their duration, still needed to be renewed before the fight was won. Our lack of melee fighters was troubling, and one of our fighters was only first circle! In the end I found myself upon the front line, and knocked down with a mighty blow, and then knocked senseless in the last moments of the fight. I learned later that I had actually died and they had needed to use the parties one Last Chance Salve upon me. After I was revived, we cleaned up the battlefield, burned the corpses, etc. Then entered the cave.

We found, among other things, a large alchemical lab, and notes (written in Throalic) explaining what they were trying and what happened. There were apparently several alchemists and magicians among them who thought that they could revive the dead. However their experiments brought back, not life, but mere undeadness. The cadaver men nailed to the trees outside were the test subjects of their fowl rituals and potions. But the undead condition soon spread like a contagion among the researchers, their supporters, and families! The shambling zombies that came from the cave complex were not additional minions sacrificed for their master's vanity, but included the actual masters themselves! Fools the lot of them.

On the way back to Throal, Garren asked me if I would train him in Illusion and allow him to copy some spells from my spellbook, which I happily agreed to.

Travelling back from the Cliff City of Syrtis, I chose to stick close to Eruriel the elven cavalier and her horse Bellerophon. Not for nothing but the world is a dangerous place and a guy could do worse than be in the company of such a hero as Eruriel. Spells are nice and all, but unless there is someone with a weapon to stand between you and the bad guys, things are going to get ugly fast. So sharing the road with Eruriel seemed like a cinch for a safe trip back home.

Well, that was until I tumbled to a rumour about some undead tormenting with a town a long the way. Of course, I had to open my fat mouth and spill it all to Eruriel. The hero that she is, the next thing I know we were packed off and headed off to save the day. Luckily for us, some others sucke.. I mean heroes had also heard the tale and had decided to help out the town folk.

But between you and me, we weren't exactly what you imagine when you think of adepts riding out to battle. There was Caesar, another human illusionist albeit of the 4th Circle, and a Wingling Shaman of the 4th Circle going by Kayapo and finally, there was a t’skrang Swordmaster with the handle Kresh'Ktor, and he was mighty green, not cause he was a t’skrang but because he was only 1st Circle and as we found out later had never been in a fight.

Well following the rumour of undead we sallied forth, as cavaliers like to say and fearlessly rode off to put a stop to the threat. Well, we hadn't gotten halfway when we were jumped by a pack of wolves. There had to be nearly a dozen of them, and they were huge. Things looked bad fast, but that Windling shaman sure had some tricks up his sleeves calling animal spirits that were infused with our own spirits ranting us preternatural speed. Caesar likewise relied on Monstrous Mantle to bolster the Caviler and her mount and the t’skrang Swordmaster. That along with my own meager magics, allowed us to defeat the beasts with minor injuries.

After we skinned the creatures and the Windling whipped up a fine stew which inspired us to tell stories of heroism late into the night. In my case, my tale was of Eruriel and Bellerophon's mad plunge into a swamp full of Lotus Crocodiles to save our wizard Zurgen from certain death. Of course, I had to throw in the tale of the two heroic hens who had given their lives to save another member of our company.

Well-fed and well-rested the next day we were in good spirits when we came across the horrific sight of four cadaver men, crucified in the forest. The undead horrors seemed helpless, but something felt wrong. So I scrambled up a protrusion of rock for both a better view of the cave mouth in the distance and for what I hoped would prove to be a place of safety. As the others began to dispatch the nailed up cadaver men, an army of cadaver men swarmed out of the cave.

Concealed from our foes, I attacked the horde of cadaver men with Ephemeral Bolts as the others formed a line/ Again the Windling filtered about calling on his spirits, again ferrets and leopards, but adding a boar as well. The battle quickly turned bloody as the creatures outnumbered us. Their claws, and fangs trying to satisfy their insatiable hunger with our flesh. One clambered up the rock and surprised me slashing me deeply and driving me off my feet. Eruriel, Bellerophon and the young T'srang were also badly wounded in the battle. But it was Caeser who was struck down and nearly slain.

The battle over, our bloodied bunch searched the cave and came upon what was clearly some sort of hidden workshop filled with scribblings describing a ritual to bring the living back from the dead, as well as a collection of alchemical concoctions to complete the task. But as was clear from the shambling cadavers, the horrific ritual didn't restore life but twisted it into the abomination of undeath.

But the scribblings and the results did get me thinking as to the nature of life and death and the thin line that served as an illusion to separate the two. But for now, I was grateful that Caeser had agreed to instruct him.

I joined a group of adepts hired by some townsfolk concerned about rumors of undead wandering to the west; Eruriel the elven cavalier and her horse Bellerophon, a pair of human illusionists Named Caesar and Garren, and a t’skrang Swordmaster Named Kresh'Ktor. We had only vague descriptions of the area where those outside the cycle of life could be found, so we headed in that general direction to see what we could find.

For quite a while, all was quiet as we looked for any signs of the undead. We were walking along a meandering game trail in an otherwise tranquil area when we were ambushed by a large pack of wolves. While we were fighting them off, a pair of powerful alphas joined the fight. I was filled with great sorry at the waste of the pack’s attack on a group of well armed adepts, and can only speculate that the wolves normal prey had been driven away by the undead we were looking for. We had to slay several of the wolves before the remains of the pack fled to seek less dangerous prey.

After the fight, I tended to both my fallen brothers-in-fur as well as to the wounds the wolves teeth and claws had done to my companions. We told great tales of heroism and bravery under the stars that night after the fight, a true Hero’s Feast, welcoming the ancestor spirits, the spirits of the forest, and the spirits of the Great Beast Lords to join us in our song of celebration of having survived the ferocity of the wolf hunt.

I shared the tale of the Playful Ferret Spirit of the Laij, who had appeared to me during a vision quest deep in the jungle and taught me to summon his brethren. I imbued my companions with the Ferret Spirits who answered my call, and we danced around the fire, celebrating that we LIVED. It was a true celebration of LIFE for the living.

Later, we followed the signs of disturbance in the forest to a large clearing with a cluster of tall stones near the center. On the far side, four poor souls had been nailed to trees, yet still lived, moving pitifully. When we approached to render aid, we were horrified that the four were not long dead, but showing terrible wounds with the entrails streaming to the ground as they writhed in undeath.

Image

We surrounded one of the four to end it’s misery. After helping it to be at peace in its second death, waves of undead began pouring out of a nearby cave. The fight was quite difficult, as the waves of undead kept coming, and coming. I called upon the Ferrets and the Leopards, the Fishing Cats and the Boars, and we eventually prevailed. Garren had climbed the circle of stones and I did my best to knock back the undead that climbed to try to feast upon him. Spells flew, while Eruriel and Kresh’Ktor took point in the fight. Ceaser fell to a terrible strike by one of the undead and I will never forget the look on his face as he collapsed, the undead chewing its way through his intestines and other organs. We dispatched the creature, and then I drew on my emergency healing supplies. We were fortunately able to bring Ceaser back before his spirit was lost, but I’m afraid that even with all my skills as a healer he will bear the scars of the creature’s claws and teeth on his belly for the rest of his days in this world. Poor Kresh’Ktor was almost done in, but managed to defeat the last of those outside the cycle of life with one final slash before collapsing in exhaustion.

After we caught our breath, we explored the cave and found that a group of humans had been attempting a magical ritual of unknown origin, one apparently intended to banish death. The ritual appeared like it might work on its face, but a closer look showed that it seemed to have been deliberately designed to backfire on those performing it, transforming them into undead and driving them mad from the wounds they received while being nailed to the living trees of the forest as part of the process. We can only assume the poor fools had their reasons for attempting such a thing, tho why they would have trusted a ritual so flawed is beyond me. My only thought is that a horror may have been involved, one who took great delight in the extra “spice” of knowing that its prey would be the cause of their own deaths, with the kick of knowing the foolish could have prevented their fate if they were not so vulnerable and ignorant.

We alerted the villagers upon our return about what had happened, in the hopes that next time the horror will find its prey more wary. I am just grateful for the healing supplies we packed, and that the healing supplies were able to make such a difference for Ceasar.

It is written in a rich blue ink and the pages have a gold trim. It is written in Sperethiel.

Chapter 167: Woodland Rescue

I was returning from a summons for translation between the T'Skrang of the Floating City over Lake Ban and an envoy of Blood Elves who had traveled along the Serpent to the city. Proper Sperethiel is not my strongest language, but I was sufficient enough to settle a dispute the had resulted in the Blood Elves imprisonment until I was able to arrive. On the return trip, I met with Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth, who was all too happy to see me again, and showed his affection by volunteering me to go back south along the Via Triolvi towards Kampung Gajah. I suppose I'm getting my exercise for the year all out at once this month.

Some bit of travel led us to other famed Adepts, including the rising scholar and Elementalist Orlam. I was happy to see him, since he would be able to train me in Elementalism. We also saw the spark of hope Elisen and the honorable guardian R'edtarian. As we continued to travel, we found ourselves traveling off the main path. Alerted to the issue by our R'edtarian, it took a bit of Wizardry expertise to identify that we were subject to an Illusionist spell called Chosen Path. I attempted to force Isodoros, but my strength was severely lacking. Nevertheless, I had to break this illusion. With a bit of conversing with both myself and R'edtarian, we were able to break the spell, but elected to journey down the path anyway to figure out what caused it. I dispelled the trap, which was centered on the road. I also brought up the renewal requirement for the spell, but my voice fell silent on this proactive team of resolutionists (and not because I did not actually speak to them).

We found an area that was ideal for trappings. With Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth in the lead, he was the first to fall into a pit trap, following shortly by Isodoros. The team struggled to free Isodoros, but Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth was able to move through the earth. With Orlam's metal wings, the rest of the team elevated to where the pitfalls would not affect us. Soon a few creatures that made Orlam brighten with pure bliss appeared and a fight ensued. I really need to stay out of these fights. It's not like I contribute much outside of my chain casting. Everyone benefits just from starting a fight near me.

After dealing with these creatures, we continued on to Kampung Gajah, where a man had exclaimed that his daughter was missing. How devastating. I know I was worried sick when Vralino went missing. Even worse, she was living with her father Jarock! I can't believe she left me for him! Or maybe he kidnapped her? Either way, the party unanimously elected to track down his daughter and bring her back safely. During our investigation, we found that she had joined her boyfriend, who was on a hunt in the woods. I don't know if the girl knows how much danger being in the woods alone with a man can be. We hastily pursued to find the boy's campsite, and subsequently found him and his mule, both turned to Jade. The mule was broken to bits and gnarled on. The jade was strangely comprised of jadeite and flesh. I was unable to revert the saddle back, and was doubtful I could do better with the mule itself or the boy. Thankfully, that fear is subsided, but sadly it was replaced with a new one; where was the girl?

We found the girl in a cave. Some alchemical brewings were infusing their culminating effects within a beaker on a table, and shortly after we entered, we were encountered by Basilisks. The entire party knew that these were what turned that boy and mule to jade. We began our bid on survival, with the party spreading to the corners to separate the Basilisks. I granted our physical experts flaming weapons, but wasn't able to do much else. As the momentum built and shifted, Orlam called out the location of the Wizard and Elisen streaked across the cave, embedding his very essence into various locations along the cave wall. The fight quickly dwindled down as we tended to the Basilisks, extracting their expectorant in an attempt to cure the jade boy. It worked.

Strangely, I would have thought there might be a newborn expected, as it happened with Vralino. The woods can be such a wondrous and dangerous place, that anyone's judgement could falter, particularly when they are not fond of their home life. Perhaps the girl is not as much a fool as I was. Perhaps she was lucky to be interrupted by this Wizard and us as her rescuers. Either way, I hope that she doesn't make the same mistakes I made. At least her family welcomed her back home.

When asked about it, the scribes detail that the Great Library paid way too much for it, and even had to go through relatively unsavory channels to obtain it, compared to other entries. Intrigue sets over you as you dive into a story of ulterior motive, written by one who goes by Nyxallah Praetor.

In line with Alex's directive, I've ceased reports on the natives and begun focusing my attention to the societal economy and wilderness threats. I found a new Warrior who had just woken up who went by the name Massif. An apt nomenclature and moniker, the stone-like Namegiver nearly broke my hand as we greeted each other with a handshake. Take note that normally, our traditional greetings may be taken as offensive. A description of a handshake is each person's right hand embraces the other's right hand, and we gently shake up and down. For some reason, Massif ignored the gentle part of the handshake.

Today I went out as a silent mentor, taking in the sights, watching the denizens interact, and learning about the environment of one of our target areas. Getting into the party was fairly easy. I told Massif that I punched things well. I figured that was the best way to communicate to a combatant was to describe my combat prowess. I have yet to unlock the secrets behind their fabled craftsmanship, so I'm a little lacking in my development. Nevertheless, we departed with a party of six, including Eruriel. This time, I'd keep my mouth shut and my eyes and ears open to report on the dangers of Barsaive.

First, the place is crawling with dangerous creatures of many types. We saw bees that behaved like mosquitoes. Large bees. Rough measurement puts them between 10 and 14 Decimeters. While they seem dangerous, there were quite fragile. A single punch could break a hole in any of them, so imagine what it would be like if we had Ruby on board to deal with them. They weren't too dangerous for my companions, either. The spell slingers were able to stay out of the fight for the most part, and I along with our notable Cavalier from the last outing and a new Warrier were able to form somewhat of a protective bubble. Decent teamwork for new adventurers. I believe they identified as Circle Ones, so they're in the right mindset.

Then there were the Crocodiles. At least they looked like crocodiles. Large armored lizards were a mild danger to the group. They also broke our lines and made tactics more difficult. They would pop out of swamps and shallow puddles, remarkably inconsistent with the physics of hiding their bodies in the water. Perhaps the ponds were deeper than I had anticipated. I didn't have time to observe the depths, as while one snatched up our Wizard, another went after our Archer. I headed off the beast anticipating another was nearby, and it exposed the bone in my leg when it surfaced. A couple chickens later, I was free and doing what I could to injure them, rendering them slightly less effective at hunting my party members. All the while, our Warrior took a front near our Illusionist as our Cavalier rescued our Wizard. I'm not sure how we can improve tactically, but we all made it out ok with scarcely a major wound.

As we journeyed through the crime infested city of Sosanopa to the north and followed the Serpent River to the east, there was talk of slavers along the river. One of the party members took a particular interest in removing this threat. I wonder if slavery is done differently here? The candidates certainly didn't seem valuable, being the more valuable ones were female and pregnant. I wonder if pregnant criminals are a problem here. I remember an adventure where we arrived at a town called Pavar Hill who were encouraged to sire or birth a child with random passers-by. Did we inadvertently partake in criminal activity?

Barsaive is quite the strange land. The arrival of reinforcements would bring about a familiarity that is long missed. I'd even welcome Lachelle into my home with open arms.

by Zurgan Zodd

Chapter One: Food and Drink
Spoiler:

Wing-Ling's Coffee Shop
Throal
4 out of 5 grimoires

The pastries here are excellent, perfect flaky crust, and an ideal ratio of filling. They offer a good variety of flavors, mostly seasonal fruit, but also an excellent cheese and a sweet mushroom filling good enough for any dwarf grandma.

The coffee is also good, though not remarkable, they don't have the widest selection of varietals, though they do a good job of brewing.

I highly recommend this place for any informal meetings or get-togethers. It's run by windlings, and they keep the atmosphere light and fun. If you have problems getting along with windlings, just relax, take yourself less seriously, and take any pranks they might pull on you as an opportunity for laughter. The pastries are huge and delicious, I've always wondered how they manage to make them so big, but I haven't seen the inside of their kitchen. Judging by the end result, whatever they do works. The first time I came here was actually on my first job, and the food and laughter filling the room helped to cut down on the awkwardness one always experiences on meeting strangers.

Spicyz
Sosanopa
3 out of 5 grimoires

A decent place for a quick bite. The portions are very large, which this dwarf never complains about, but the sandwiches lacked a certain refinement. I'll never say no to a pile of meat on bread, but we strive for something elevated, between these covers. But if what you want is a full belly late at night, you can't go wrong here. They do specialize in a side dish of fried vegetables, which aren't to everyone's taste, but they are so proud of them you'll feel obligated to eat them, unless you want to take the risk of offending an Ork chef. (I don't recommend this).

My first time here was on a caravan from Throal. The long journey with nothing but trail food provided countervailing biases; on the one hand, I was starving for meat, and this sandwich hit the spot, on the other hand, I was tired of stew and beans and boring trail food, and the simplicity of the sandwiches left me wanting something a little more creative. I did eat the fried vegetables, which gave me terrible wind, it wasn't really a problem for me, but everyone who spent the night in my barrack gave me some frightfully dirty looks in the morning.

Nettle Bank Farms
Via Triolvi
5 out of 5 grimoires

This is truly spectacular. If you get the chance to visit, you must. One way or another, you need to try their melons. If not, get your hands on some of their liqueur, it's not the same as eating the fresh melons, with juice running down into your beard, but it's a close second. The fruit is like sunshine made flesh, with the sweetness of a summertime romance, no description I could give you would do it justice. It's worth a multi-day trip just to try it, and if you haven't, you should. You can try to find it in the market, but be warned it sells out the day it arrives, everyone who's tried it will pay almost any price for it. My recommendation would be to hit every produce seller that has a good relationship with House Mikul, when the melons come in season, if you join the end of a long line, you'll be a dipper with a hole in it.

The liqueur is even more expensive, but easier to come by, as it's not perishable, and the merchants have found the right price point to balance demand. Be warned, though, it is eye-wateringly expensive. Your best bet, as I said, is still to take the trip to the farm, at harvest time, and offer them a helping hand – no farm in the history of Barsaive has ever turned away help at a harvest – and if you work hard, and don't steal any melons, they'll take care of you, and you'll be glad you made the trip. One warning, though – be careful of Blood Bees. The first time I encountered these melons, I learned not long after just how much Blood Bees love them, the hard way. Fortunately, this old dwarf's hide is tough, so I survived the experience to write about it. Frankly, the melon is so good it's worth getting stung for, if necessary.
Chapter Two: Lodgings

Chapter Three: Employers
Spoiler:

House Mirkul
Throal
5 out of 5 Grimoires
Rules, paperwork, lots of forms, and straight-shooting traders. I'm not a bureaucrat, but I appreciate what they do. If you work for Mirkul, you'll need to keep your nose clean, and do a good job, but they pay well, they're reliable, and they'll never screw you over or keep you in the dark on important details. To this day I still have my Mirkul pendant, though its been years since I rode along on a caravan with them, but I know I could walk into their office tomorrow, and I'd get an assignment, with no secret hooks and good pay, but if I slacked off they'd still dock me, no matter how much my legend has grown. Underneath all the bureaucracy, and the sharp-as-razors trading practices, these are good people, and they provide a valued service to Barsaive.
Chapter Four: Travel Routes
Spoiler:

The Via Triolvi
Bartertown to Sosanopa
A relatively safe and easy road. It's quite idyllic, with charming farms all along the way, interspersed with occasional woodlands. My first time along the route I did encounter Blood Bees, but I think that was an anomaly, and normally the road is so well-traveled that such dangers get eliminated pretty quickly – in fact, if you're the first to run across such a danger, it's likely you can make a quick payday taking care of it. Just report it to your favorite big trading company, and make them an offer, you'll get sorted out pronto.

The Serpent River
Lake Vors to Lake Ban
If you travel to the Cliff City of Syrtis, you'll probably pass along this stretch of the great river. It's changed, now, but once this was a very dangerous place, crawling with slavers, so that nobody was safe, ships were taken, and even whole villages were destroyed, their people enslaved. Near the edges of the river, one might run into some nasty predators, too, I once got chewed up by a pack of crocodiles passing through here (though I did put myself in harm's way, chasing the beasts after they'd purloined some of our goods.) I was saved from certain death by a beautiful elf, and I got my revenge on those wretched lizards.

It's not so bad now, a lot of people were (obviously) really unhappy about the blatant slavery, and we got together and did something about it. See other entries in this book for more on that. You're welcome, younger generation.
Chapter Five: Places
Spoiler:

Sosanopa
This is a very dangerous place, though the nights are no longer stalked by slavers, there's something in the air here that inflames tempers and encourages subterfuge. Superstitious people say that people in the city are driven to murder, I can neither deny nor confirm, I've never made a close study of it. See the bibliography, where I reference a few scholars who have. You'll probably have to pass through here at various times in your life, as it's the gateway from Throal to the Serpent River, so just keep your wits about you and be cautious of dark alleys, and you'll be fine.

Throal
It's Throal. There's not much to say that hasn't been said. Check the bibliography for references on history and architecture and mind-numbing studies on ethnography and anthropology.

The Cliff City of Syrtis
A fascinating, beautiful place. I made friends here, and even studied wizardry from some T'Skrang; I believe a diversity of education is valuable. Anyway, if you're able to be open and accepting of other cultures, and expand your own preconceptions a bit, I highly recommend spending some time here. The place is a work of beautiful architecture, and its chock full of fascinating secrets and ingenious magical workings and engineering.

Another day, another silver. Life in Bartertown was no bargain. Folks say you can buy anything for the right price, and there is a good coin to be made locating what folks want, that's where I came in. Sometimes they are looking for an item, sometimes information, sometimes a person, and each one has its own kind of trouble, and it took skills to suss out what jobs were more trouble than they were with. Being a Circle One Illusionist, my half magic gave me an insight into the difference between the truth and the lies that came together in the client's story. But truth be told no one is perfect and I had made the wrong call and needed to get out of town for a while until things cooled down.

That is where the Obsidiman Massif came in. Word was he had a connection with the Dwarven Trading House Mikul and a lead on a job for caravan guards. I found him sitting in a Wingling coffee shop. After days held up hiding out, I was so hungry I'd have taken the job just for a couple of muffins. Luckily Masivv agreed to hire me along with some other adepts, and pretty soon we were on our way.

I'd not see much of the world, so a trip to the cliff city of Syrstis sounded pretty good. Had I tumbled to how dangerous the trip was going to be, I'd have taken my lumps in Bartertown.

Turned out caravan guards are expected to handle cargo as well. But pretty soon I got the skinny on how to avoid most of the physical labour and planned on a nice vacation. I also scoped out the power structure of the caravan. In our case Leck, a Dwarf, the caravan master was like a ship's captain and the face of the caravan. Cyran, the elf quartermaster was in charge of all the goods, and Maz, the house clerk handle the cash box. But the guy everyone wanted to like them, is the cook, in our case a fella named Dug. If you want to know if you are on the outs with the powers that be, you know by the quality and quantity that cookie dumps in your bowl. As the caravan departed Bartertown, I kept my head down, and my eyes out for the telltale signs of undue attention.

Our first memorable stop was Nettle Bank Farm. I guess the farm was as memorable as the farmer's daughter Frannie and her melons. The biggest juiciest melons I had ever laid my eyes on at the time. The family used the melons to make a melon liquor, with a wonderful aroma. As we departed Nettle Bank farm I considered heading back someday to chat up Frannie and maybe spending my life on the peaceful farm, but deep down I knew that was not the fate life had in store for me.

What we found out later on the road when a crate of sticky liquor broke and leaked inside the wagon was that Blood Bees loved that smell too. Luckily I heard the swarm as they approached and was able to warn the caravan before attacked. The blood bees came in fast and attacked. As the battle ensued, I scurried around the wagon to see my comrades under attack. and barely avoiding being trampled by the cavalier, before unleashing an Ephemeral Bolt. Luckily we managed to snuff out the attack, but again my mind shifted to Frannie's big juicy melons and Nettle Bank Farm. *Given the treat, someone would need to take a for this hive of blood bees. Perhaps Frannie's family will offer a reward to protect the farm from the pests.

After proving our mettle in the fight against the Blood Bees, Dug the cook started serving us up double portions of chow.

Out time with the caravan ended when we arrived at Sosanopa, to meet the riverboat for the rest of our journey to the cliff city of Syrstis. The highlight of the town of Sosanopa was joint known to the cavalier, who was tied up with the orc Chef. In Sosanopa we also heard rumors that slavers were plying their trade heavily along the river, but what was most distressing was we heard pregnant women were of special interest to the slavers. Houses of Fenestral and Barbant seem to be involved.

I don't talk about it much., but I was stolen from my own family as a boy, and while I escaped I was forced to survive on the streets of Bartertown on my own. Nothing tears at my guts more than slavers, but didn't have time to stick my beak into things before we cast off aboard the Folyami, captained by a T'srang named T'gaits. The time on the river was very educational as we gained some insights into how some slaves managed to slip free of their bonds and make it to freedom, but loose lips sink ships, so mums the word on that tale for a more private place. What I will say is my opinion of House Mikul grew more positive.

On the Snake River we had a chance for a first-hand lesson on the evils of slavery as er saw burned down villages, and less obviously the impact on the spiritual health of the river. That became particularly vivid when a bask of Lotus Crocodiles snatched away some cargo, and a group of us volunteered to go ashore and retrieve the cargo. It was a close-run thing, as the devilishly sneaky creatures would dart out of the water, and grab ahold of their targets. My own trousers needed to be replaced after the beast shredded 'em trying to eat me. If you are ever on that stretch of the river, you'll see a pile of croc skulls below a clay memorial erected in honour of two heroic chickens.

Luckily the rest of the trip was peaceful and we had a chance to catch the sights and accompany Massif on his pilgrimage. Not sure I'll ever make it back to the cliff city of Syrstis, but I sure won't forget those wonderful sights.
