From the journal of Thane Cawdor

A small-time merchant going by the name, Mr. Livé, has been papering all of Throal with broadsides and handbills advertising that he is willing to pay top prices for various plants and animals from the Blood Wood. These advertisements emphasis the rich rewards available, but totally omit mention of the very considerable dangers and risks sure to be encountered in such a dangerous place. Barsiave History told that the Wyrm wood was a place of much power, and not safe nor welcoming to unescorted visitors. The new legends starting to trickle out of the Blood Wood indicate it is a place of even more fearsome danger and even less welcoming of uninvited strangers. Pethrytholilanista, Gronk, Ceadda, Romari, and I decided to check out the harvesting operations.

We arrived at the place described in the handbills (map coordinates 36:05) to find a camp of about 60 people. Most of them were non-adepts, but most of them looked fairly competent in their trades of hunting and gathering. We were much concerned that they were all underestimating the dangers of the blood wood. The merchant was living on a boat in the river. Livé welcomed us and gave us his list of most desired plants and animals. He struck me very much as a flim-flam man. Very shady. We shared our concerns about his force of gatherers, but he was supremely unconcerned. He freely admitted that some might be killed, but he described it as their own choice to engage in risky practices.

It being very early afternoon, we decided to enter the outskirts of the BW and do some light gathering in the hours until sunset. We found some Blood Berry bushes, and some Blood Vine, which we gathered. Upon approaching one of Blood Vines, Ceadda was attacked by an assassin vine, which encircled his neck and drew him up far off the ground. He was able to sever the loop around his neck and from then on we were also on the lookout for those.

As we traveled through the woods, it seemed as if the woods themselves conspired to impede our progress. At one point Romari and I got separated from the others, It was as if the path we had trod moved between us and the rest, leaving us upon a different path. It seemed like the woods actively impeded us from rejoining the main party.

We detected some people and creatures attempting to sneak up on us in time for me to activate both "Attack of the Stripes" and Displace Image". We were attacked by two high circle Blood Elf swordmasters, whom we captured, 2 wolflike creatures that spat lightning bolts, one of which we captured and the other was sadly slain, and two Blood Elf Archers, which ran away. We carried our unconscious adversaries back to camp (which was very slow and difficult going) and interrogated them in the morning. We did not learn much, other than that the Blood Elf government would treat each incursion into their territory as an invasion. And that if the Blood Warders (whom these apparently were) could not handle us, the Exolashers would be summoned.

The camp had grown to around 100 people, and many were planning on entering the BW that day. We tried to dissuade as many as possible, but only persuaded a few dozen. We were going to join the largest of the groups and attempt to protect them, when it was suggested that we attempt to negotiate a trade deal with a nearby village. At first we tried to locate the town of Trinovar, which somebody had heard of, but ended up managing to locate Announa. The elders there agreed to trade with Travar merchants much of the stuff Live wanted. The elders also agreed to put in a word towards having any of the current gatherers who seemed unarmed and harmless escorted out of the BW if they looked like they were coming to grief.

We took a few Announa villagers to meet Live, whom apparently had never once considered actually approaching residents of the blood wood to gather and trade stuff from the blood wood. He was very open to this previously unthought of plan. So in the end Live was happy, because he got his trade goods. We were happy because we were paid. The Blood Warders were happy, because there would not be strangers wandering the blood wood, and the villagers were happy, since they got employment and trade. The only people who seemed to have gotten a raw deal were the 100 or more gatherers that Live had enticed out Throal for promises of riches. It was more than a weeks journey out from Throal for most of them. Some came to great grief in the woods. Then a day or two later it was announced that Blood Elves would be dong the gathering in the Blood Wood and Throalic gatherers were nether needed, nor wanted, nor permitted. And then it was another week or so's walk back to Throal. I still can't believe that Live would not have even considered approaching the Blood Elves!

From the journal of Gronk Longtusk

10 Gahmil, 1424 T.H.
The Buunda Boyz have heard of a businessman named Mr. Livé who is mounting an expedition to the Blood Wood to try and harvest some of its natural resources. None of us have been there, but Nista has and her experience is that the Blood Elves are adamant that we not bother them. We've agreed to go with him to try and keep his people out of trouble.

20 Gahmil
Having ignored the established meeting place set forth by the Blood Elves, Mr. Livé set up camp on the Southern Edge of the wood. We spent some time meeting and glad-handing the other recruits, only to discover that they were all non-Adepts. This does not bode well for their survivability. Mr. Livé himself maintained his residence on a boat in the Serpent, coming out only to encourage people and give lists of his desired biologicals, only the most deadly plants and animals to inhabit the Blood Wood, natch. He was unconcerned about the long-term survivability of his other employees.

20 Gahmil (Continued)
Having made camp, we took a quick foray into the wood to see if we could recover any of the things Mr. Livé desired. The forest was very disorienting. Mere moments after entering, we found ourselves separated into two groups some yards apart. Only repeated and careful coordination allowed us to stay together afterward.

After collecting some Blood Berries and Blood Vines and Blood This and Blood That, one of the vines that Ceadda was trying to harvest decided to eat him. It quickly wrapped around him, tightening against his flesh and tearing at his armor, but with a burst of Strength, he was able to break free.

The passive defenses of the Kaer seeming not enough to hold us at bay, a team of Blood Warders with two Swordmasters, two Archers, and two Ethandrilles attacked us. We were able to capture one of the Swordmasters and bring him back to camp for interrogation.

Back in camp, the interrogation did not go very far. He was adamant that there was no way of negotiating successful exit from the Blood Wood, let alone commerce, and we eventually let him go. The camp had nearly doubled in size, so we made some impassioned speeches and declarations to get the less experienced folks to leave. One tried to punch Ceadda, so Ceadda rendered him unconscious in a single blow.

21 Gahmil
Nista summoned a spirit of the place that was able to guide us to a relatively friendly village within the Blood Wood, and there we negotiated a semblance of peace.
