I travel again with Dale the Illusionist, this time the remaining tools of war include an Obsidiman Warrior named Killian, a Human Elementalist named Orlam, and a Dwarven Scout going by Meviel.
The New Day stables in the shanty town outside Throal was prepared to send a heard of sheep to a town going by Synevir, I was unaware of this location. Wisely, Mr. Hastings knew this herd would be covetted, and knew better that the wise fighter prepares to win and then goes to war. Thus, I and my companions were hired to protect the herd and attendants.
We travelled as swift as a cart with Obsidiman could travel, thus I did not need to burden a beast with my bulky form. As such, we would be perceived as a ripe target. I knew this would move our enemies forward like a crashing wave, looking to take advantage. They would be unprepared for the earthen cliffs it would crash upon. A number of days hence we were approached by a small group of bandits, they hoped to subdue us without a fight. They attempted to extort Mr. Kain through intimidation, but he had listed and knew that he must move swiftly as the wind back to the safety of the herd and let us teach these ruffians the meaning of battle. Once battle was commenced we could see further ruffians looking to flank around and take advantage of our engagement with their vanguard. We dispatched their leader and some of his henchmen quickly and gave the remaining bandits pause. A brief show of force allowed us to turn the tables and subdue our enemies without further combat.
We recovered over the night and pressed on. As we were approaching our destination, howls and the patter of feet approached from behind us. More twisted beasts approached, these loped towards the herd, we attempted to intercept, but they ignored us and continued on. Chaos may also present opportunity, the single mindedness of the beasts allowed us to attack with more reckless abandon. As we held the beasts at bay, there was a call of wolves ahead of us. The critical position was between these beasts and the herd, the wolves were an unknown threat at this point. So we continued to push our advantage. The passions smiled upon our knowledge of war, the wolves moved in a silent hunting movement past the herd and bit into the beasts, attempting to slow and scatter them. They paid little heed to our group or the herd. This allowed us to secure our victory as planned.
We later found out that this village has negotiated protection from the spirit that ran with the wolves, and we would have been fed to the pack had we injured them. This is respectful, and why an opponent should not be assumed to be an enemy until they reveal their intentions.
Dale proved a weapon that continues to gain a greater edge as it is hone further and further, he clouded and slowed the enemies with great effect. Mevial was a great asset, flexible and adaptable in the assessment of the battlefield, but still brought to bear on the enemy like a Scythan Axe. Orlan and Killian started well, but seemed to become winded as battles pressed on, they must be further tempered in the fires of battle to help reach their full potential.
