Notes of Dalyor, Elf Wizard of Second Circle.

Vinnidamous Goronich, is an Alchemist in Throal with the Merchants' dilemma of the spots around Throal being taken, but the spots further away being dangerous, and buying ingredients on the market depletes profit margins. He further tells us that this famous wizard Dubhan Goronich is actually Vinny's Cousin, and he told stories about hauling in an entire Alchemy Lab. So Vinny sets out to an area near Irondelve to set up shop and "claim the sites". Reyis the Windling Shaman, Icarus the Human Air Sailor, Torgun the Dwarfen Swordmaster, and I escort Vinny on this task.

After getting attacked by some Wolves I experienced the walk of a Dwarf, my movement severely hampered by the Wolf's teeth. After some resting and a good night's sleep, my body returned to my usual Elven grace.
As such we arrive near the Irondelve Settlement two days later. It feels good, coming home, seeing the people. I seem to have been a little too giddy with excitement, so I spent the night outside the gates with the others who weren't able to produce a presentable piece of art.

We were greated by Bandar who seems to have taken up a leadership position within the settlement. After some introductions and exchange of stories we introduce Vinny's proposal of establishing an agreement to let Vinny gather alchemical reagents for a cut of the material's worth. The agreement is sealed and we head out slightly later and watch Vinny gather different plants. I let him explain some of these plants, their workings, and their reactions when combined in different ways. We also encountered a swarm of Blood Bees, which have the nasty habbit of attaching to their victims and pumping the blood out. We have of course been victorious in defending Vinny.

After Vinny paid his dues to Irondelve, we made our way back to Throal. Halfway through we were greeted by one Bogdamous "Bog" Goronich. Apparently he had some outstanding debt to settle with Vinny. Vinny won his funds in a game of poker, which Bog didn't like, as he is "the one taking money off people". After a very quick demonstration of power, mainly from Torgun's and Icarus's, and our Windling Shaman knocking him over, he backpedaled and promised to consider the debt as erased.

Please find attached notes on multispectral living crystal and the behaviour of Wolves, different forms of Blood Bees, and the workings of the Goronich Family.

Rambling Gambling Man

Post by Icarus-Wolfswift » Mon May 25, 2020 12:21 am

"I was drinking in my favorite tavern "The Pale T'Skrang," Swapping stories with other adventurers about my latest deeds around Throal. When the bartender Grombeard, pointed out to me a job posted on his missive board. An Alchemist by the name of Vinnidamous from the dwarven House Goronich, was looking for adventurers to help him on a trip to Iron-Bark Grove. I saw he needed the aid of a trained navigator and decided to throw my ship into the storm.

upon reaching the spot listed on the missive I found a decent sized building and outside I saw two familiar faces, Reyis the Shaman and Dalyor the Wizard. Both I knew were good company and up and coming adepts like myself. standing near them was a Dwarf I never met before, he introduced himself as Torgun a sword-master. I didn't know anything about him but I could tell he had seen a battle or two and didn't worry about his ability. Inside the building we found an alchemy lab set up and were greeted by a stout Dwarf who introduced himself as Vinnidamous, but asked us to call him Vinni. He directed us through a door into what he called his office, it however was small and looked to be no more than a large closet. He sat across his "Desk" from us which was more of a small table, and began to inform us of the job. He wanted to find an untouched alchemy resource spot that he could lay claim to and heard from his cousin Duban of a place called Iron-bark grove. Near Iron-bark grove is a settlement called Iron-delve and he needs help convincing the natives to let him have access to the land for gathering. Lucky for him Dalyor was from Iron-delve and knew the people there, this would come to our aid majorly. With that we planned to head out the next day, all to meet up at the gates of Throal. I drank myself a fair share of ale and passed out at my favorite booth in the "Pale T'Skrang" not wanting to make the walk back to my cabin outside of Throal.

Next day we left Throal and with my Navigation skills and Reyis's Wilderness survival expertise we managed the trip no problem. About half way there while we were camping for the night, Vinni with a little to much drink in him told us that he actually didn't have any investors for this project but actually got the money from winning big on gambling and decided to push his luck and try to get his foot in the door with some alchemy ingredients. This I respected immensely, a man takes the chance and wins, decides to push it even farther; I love that. The next day along the road we met some wolfs, two normal pack members and a Alpha wolf. They ripped into me and Dalyor a little bit but we came out top. Hell I even came out of that fight with three pelts to have made into a nice wolf fur coat when I get back to Throal.

Reaching the settlement of Iron-delve we were met with several armed militia fighter that asked us our business but recognized Dalyor so they were less on edge. after a short exchange of words we proceeded with a greeting ritual in which me, reyis, and Dalyor even somehow botched and completed the ritual but it was so bad they asked us to wait outside the village for a day until we can do it again tomorrow. the next day Vinni met with the village healer/leader named Bandar, an Ork women. after a long exchange of words between our party and Bandar we came to an agreement that was good for both sides and she gave us a map of Iron-bark grove so Vinni could see the area he would be collecting from. In the grove i saw beautiful plants I had never seen, since I had never made it down to the Servos jungle. I was dumbfounded by what I saw and thought to myself "How come I didn't build my cabin down here??" But then I heard buzzing and more buzzing and even more buzzing, then I remembered I fucking hate the Servos jungle and every single living thing inside this passion forsaken jungle. Because then about 6 Blood bees came out the trees and started attacking us. I yelled for Vinni to get back behind me and the parley began. after a few close calls including a blood bee attaching itself to Torgun and one poisoning me at the end of combat we came out on top and Vinni was there shaking in his boots. after he got the supplies he needed we camped and headed back to Throal the next day.

On the road the next few days was uneventful, until we made it to a clearing in the road with two rocky slopes to our left and right. out run six bandits with bows three on both sides and in front of us on the road a Stout pig faced (not literally this is not Grakkor) Dwarf. The Dwarf starts to yell out at our party demanding that Vinni give him the money he won in the gambling game, Vinni reveals this is his other cousin Bogdamous Goronich a Thief Adept. he try to threaten us and tells our group to stand down so he can just take the money from Vinni and no one would be hurt. He asks us to make the "Sensible" decision, I scream out "Hey pal I have never made a sensible decision in my life" and I was the first one to make his move in combat and closed the distance on him and started slashing away at him. a few moments later after Torgun and Reyis came to help me deal with this thug we had him nearly almost knocked out as he yelled that he yields. I being a Throalic representative stayed my hand and let the man speak. He said that all of this can be forgotten and Vinni told him if he tries something like this again he will hire Us adepts to finish him off. With that complete our party made a safe trip back to Throal."

Excerpts from a letter, written by Torgun Neumani and sent to his cousin Gelois Neumani, date indeterminate. Found in the archives of the Great Library during the Reorganization of 1489:

... I'll echo your father's counsel--don't deal too much with the Goronich, if you can help it. Do you recall the great scar upon my back that looks like a spear struck me in the spine? I got that because of that dread clan. Every time I hear about them it begins to ache ...

... Vinnidamous was the one I worked with. He wanted to stake a claim in the Ironbark Grove, on the edge of the Servos. Amazing flora there, and he wanted exclusive rights to it for alchemical purposes, and had backers willing to pay for security. Four of us--the human Icarus, the elf Dalyor, the windling Reyis, and of course myself--were to lead him there and help him negotiate a deal. As you may guess it became more complicated than that ...

... even in those days the plains were fairly safe. We saw naught but a trio of wolves, who likely attacked out of desperation or starvation. We made quick work of them. We had several easy nights at the campfire and plenty of time to talk, and it was then that devil Vinnie revealed that there were no backers, and he was undertaking this himself with some poker winnings! Whether he was just a fool taking a grand chance with money he could ill afford to lose, or a savant blessed by Chorrolis himself, I'll never know.
As I say, the travel itself was easy; the real difficulty came once we arrived at Irondelve. Let me take a moment for an aside--study well your painting! The militia at Irondelve asked us to indulge them in the Rites of Introduction and I swear, the others made such a mess of it. Had they had the diligence of education and training that we dwarves had, they might have fared better. Icarus Windswift made a map that would work beautifully, if your aim was to find a mud puddle floating in the sky; Reyis prepared food that, I kid you not, nearly poisoned the man who tried it; and the only reason they accepted Dalyor's effort was because he was from Irondelve. I, of course, showed I was free of taint through sartorial choices one would not expect to see from someone who had been sludging through the plains for the better part of a week. Even then, they made us camp outside of the settlement instead of allowing us to stay in the town. All this is to say: practice, young Gelois, practice! ...

... Another thing to practice is language--not just how to communicate well, but to do so in tongues besides your own. Ours is the common language but not the only language. When we met Bandar, the head of the community, I greeted her in Or'zet and she was clearly impressed that I had made the effort to learn her tongue and reach out to her in such a way. It is little touches like these that grease the wheels during negotiations--you cannot expect Chorrolis to do all the work for you!
Icarus and myself led the initial discussion, with Vinnie and Bandar eventually reaching an agreement that he would have exclusive gathering rights to Ironbark Grove, with 20% of his profits returning to the community. (Seeing how receptive they were gave me the idea for my return trip, and set off much of what came afterwards, for me. Let that be a lesson, cousin--pay attention to the deals being made around you, even if you do not benefit directly! You may find some detail that can work in your favor for later trade.) ...

... The Grove itself was easy to get to, and beautiful. Just amazing. So taken where we with the environment that we almost didn't notice the bees until they set upon us. Don't laugh; these were not normal bees, but large insects with sacs for draining blood from Namegivers! That is where I get my scar--one stuck me from behind and began to drain me! Thankfully Dalyor's and Reyis' magics kept the bees occupied, so Icarus and I could make short work of the insects. Dreadful beasts. And Vinnie, the coward, hid behind a bush while we did his dirty work. ...

... We were all tired and worn and ready to return to Throal after a successful trip, so of course Vinnie's cousin Bogdamous intercepted us on the way home, and tried to extort money from Vinnie. We weren't having it, frankly. Neither were the Passions, I think: he had six men with him, archers, and three of them had their bow strings snap in the first moments of action! Icarus and I put blade to Bog until he cried our pardon and called his men off. We all returned to Throal, where I began organizing my own caravan to Irondelve--while keeping an ear out to hear what powers and responsibilities were being shuffled around in clan Goronich. We get so tied up in our own familial intrigues, but much can be gained by watching the foibles of the other families ....
