Summon Bone Spirit

Post by Lamoron » Fri Jul 05, 2019 7:23 am

My quest to understand the possibilities and limitations of summoning continues. Now I've made my Bone Circle and a fight has broken out. I summon my Bone Spirit and it rolls initiative. If the initiative has already happened the Bone Spirit sits out this round, but the second round it takes action, most likely manifesting as it's first action, but...
  • Can I order it to use aggressive/defensive stance in the fight?
  • Can I use my spells on it, like Soul Armor?
  • If I can use spells, and have two Bone Circles, can I use Aspect of the Bone Spirit on the other Bone Spirit when summoned?

I'd say yes to the first two questions.

Unfortunately, I rarely get to use this spell because I don't have the opportunity to create Bone Circles because the spell takes too long to cast. Our group is travelling a lot.

I usually just take the first watch each night, and then set up the circle. I'm eagerly awaiting Circle 5 so I can summon it in one turn. If you set one up each night you should have two of them within range if you travel 20 miles per day.

I actually missed that. Unfortunately my DM would probably give me a negative modifier on my perception for keeping watch while casting.

My character is at circle 5.

I’m using Shield Mist and Astral Spear in Enhanced Matrices, Death’s Head and Pain in Standard Matrices and Life Circle of One in a Spell Matrix. Object.

Unfortunately I’m not willing to change Shield Mist or Astral Spear for Summon Bone Spirit. :\

have you considered using the command nightflyers talent to recruit a bat or five to help out? heck, you could probably even buy them as a trained animal if you think they're not going to be around where you're traveling to by default (you'll probably need to bring food for them with you if you do that, but carrying them should be easy enough).

with innate stealthy stride and high dexterity step plus 3 different enhanced sense abilities and a good perception step, they would probably be exceptionally good at guarding a campsite. they're commonly domesticated as well, and should be relatively easy to transport (you'll probably want some other type of animal to carry them with you during the day, given they are presumably nocturnal).

no exact price is listed, though i would imagine it's going to be a fair bit more than 20 silver each (given their sensing organ alone is worth that much)... but it's a decent investment imo :)

(depending on how generous your GM is in interpreting the text of command nightflyers, you may also be able to just recruit a few to your cause long-term rather than needing to buy them, though i would presume that you'd still need to arrange food and transport given they won't go against their instincts for you).

That is a great idea! Thank you!

Carrying food is not a problem at all. The Obsidiman Warrior has to be useful for something, after all. ;)

I always thought that bone circles are something rare to cast since they can be connected with a caster "minor pattern items etc."

My nethermancer guards his bone circles like his grimoire and only cast them in places nobody would find them (or ward them against intruders).

Well, after you make the Circle and summon the spirit, you can - according to the text - simply remove any sign of it, so I don't see why it would be a problem to leave them around, beyond the fact that random people could walk into them and get mauled.
