Greetings,

They are not born with thorns. All children in Blood Wood undergo the Ritual of Thorns and about 10% don't survive. Blood elves are increasingly questioning if the ritual is still necessary—no parent wants to see their child go through that agony, nor the chance they don't survive. However, hubris may as well be a synonym for Alachia.

Please let me know if there are any further questions.

Best regards,

Morgan

Hiya,

They are born as normal elves, but undergo the Ritual of Thorns like other blood elves. Reference ED1 The Blood Wood, p.14 specifically (Current Attitudes section) and the earlier parts of the Ritual of Thorns section.

Hope this helps!

The Earthdawn Novel 7 states that the children of blood elves can develop thorns after a few months after birth and in rare cases die from them.
However, if the thorns do not appear, the babies are subjected to the ritual of thorns, which can also be fatal.

What do you mean by "novel 7"? That doesn't mean anything.

(Based on release order, "Novel 7" would be "Lost Kaer" by Nigel Findley, which -- IIRC -- doesn't have blood elves in it at all.)

Do you have an actual title for the book? Or the author? Something we can use to identify what you're talking about?

Hiya,

I think Belenus is talking about Little Treasures? I've not read the German version, just the English manuscript. I don't recall anything relating to spontaneous development of thorns, however. There is a section where the mother is concerned that her baby might have thorns due to other reasons? A Horror? Sorry, it's been a very long time since I read this and my memory isn't what it used to be.

The German versions of the novels do indeed have numbers.

Number 7 would be "Little Treasures".

I find the answer that they are all born without thorns surprising.
I understood that the Ritual of Thorns changed many of the creatures of the Blood Wood spontaneously, Such as for example the Ethandrille breed was more or less accidentally and permanently changed and they now breed true with thorns. If the Ethandrille are breeding true with thorns, I find it surprising that the actual target of the Ritual of Thorns (elves) are not.

How would the mother survive giving birth to a child with thorns? And how would the child survive?

Ah, well. Since it hasn't been released in English, and I haven't had a chance to read it, I can't comment.

I can say, however, that as something expressed by a character in the setting, somebody might believe or fear an infant might develop thorns on their own (or be born with them) but not necessarily be correct about that. Without context it's tough to say more.
