Snakes from Above/Just a Desk

Event 2: Sucking Stones and Snakes from Above (Combat)

The path narrows so that the larger Name-givers must turn sideways to pass. You feel the paving stones beneath you suddenly quiver, as though they were made of pudding.

The characters have activated a trap left by tormented ally spirits trapped in Kratas. It is illusionary.

Sucking Stones: Detection 15; Disarm 15 (magic only); Initiative 15/d12+2d6; Trigger: walking in alley; Effect: Seems to trap foot in liquid stone, reducing movement to 2. Trapped characters are considered Harried. This is an illusion spell. Dispel 16, Sensing 21. The illusion will last for 8 rounds. Strength tests to pull free count as sensing tests. The effect extends forwards and backwards 10 yards from the center of the party.

Once the trap is triggered, dozens of ghostly figures appear in windows overlooking the party and fling down snakes. The snakes are manifested spirits with the exact same stats as the venomous snakes in the GM Guide, but appear to be partially decomposed snake and partially ropes of semi-solid fog. They can be Banished - if one is Banished then 1d4 flee into astral space. There are 1d4 snakes per character.

Ha! That's cool, I dig the area-control trap plus the lurking spirits. Good setup.

The desk is 6 feet wide by 3 feet deep and made of solid oak from the Wyrm Wood. It has been woven with elemental earth to make it extremely tough and heavy. It weighs over a thousand pounds. Each drawer has a Death Rating of 30 and Armor 12. Furthermore, each drawer door contains a hollowed capsule filled with poison gas that ruptures if the drawer is destroyed. On top of the left side of the desk is a built-in cabinet with a drawer and several pigeon holes for letters. Underneath the desk is 3 large drawers on the left, one shallow drawer in the center, and 4 on the right. There are three triggers under the middle desk drawer. If they are manipulated improperly, the blade trap slices backwards to strike the person who was messing with them. It must be disarmed in order to use the triggers safely. The one on the left triggers a blade trap that slashes out at anyone standing within 1 yard of the front of the desk. The one in the middle releases a loaded crossbow from under the desk that can be taken and used. The one on the right, when manipulated properly, unlocks the drawers.

Poison gas trap: Detection 24; Disarm NA; Initiative: 8; Trigger: opening a drawer by force; Effect: as Black Mercy pollen within 1 yard. See GM guide p 175.

Blade Trap: Detection 15; Disarm 15; Initiative 25/d20+2d12; Trigger: switch under desk to strike in front of desk or use switches improperly to strike behind desk; Effect: Step 18/d12+d10+d8 physical damage.

Lockpicking DN: 18, or using the switch under the desk, disarmed as a trap DN 8.
