While 3E and 4E kept item Availability Ratings as general guidelines, earlier editions had an actual mechanical procedure tied to those ratings. GMs could utilize the procedure to determine whether a particular item was available from a particular vendor at a particular time. I'm looking to reintroduce something similar to my 4E game to offload availability considerations from my GM brain where possible and introduce a little randomness. Does anybody have any actual experience using either the system from 1E/2E or the slightly different one from Classic? I'm particularly interested in how it feels in play, whether you found it useful, and how you may have tweaked it to fit your table.
