Disguise self and camouflage

Post by DerWish » Tue Jan 07, 2020 5:07 pm

I would like to inquire if it is appropriate to use my Disguise self talent (as an Illusionist) to change my appearance, like body paint & clothing, to enable camouflage. I happen to know the Silent Walk talent with the Shadow Hide talent knack and for survival and I'm happy to vanish in combat and only pop-up when casting a spell, after couple of turn worth of thread weaving.

Using the Oak-Leaf Cloak's example as well as the Perception modifiers described in the Gamemaster's Guide, I aim to acquire the 'Target camouflaged, same color as surroundings' modifier by using this talent.

Do you think this is possible with the base talent or better to leave it to a talent knack?

Later, who knows... maybe disguising myself as part of a tree would become possible, which would mean full concealment, like: https://static.boredpanda.com/blog/wp-c ... b__880.jpg

Greetings,

No, that isn't an appropriate use of Disguise Self which is limited to appearing as another Namegiver. Nor is it particularly appropriate for a knack to match the surroundings—this is pretty far from the purpose of the talent. A knack to blend into a crowd (similar to Bland Stride) may be appropriate, but nothing to actively give bonuses to Stealthy Stride. Disguise Self isn't about concealing your presence.

Hopefully this is helpful.

The illusionist has 2 spells to become "invisible" and 1 spell to give a bonus on silent movement.
Isn't this already enough?

So I was disguised as a guy in camouflage it wouldn’t help me hide at all. Baddies would just be like hey check out that dude next to the tree in the very convincing camouflage!

So you're saying you want a teammate to camouflage and then simply use the disguise self to look exactly like him?
Guess I would allow it as a gamemaster, since it wouldn't have any effect on the game itself. The teammate could also just camouflage yourself too

This is just another Realism vs. Rules thing

Realism: Being in full camo should do something
Rules: Nah

Oh, that's not true. The Rules just don't cover it specifically.
But it can be found in some of the texts of the creatures and gives them a natural bonus to their Stealthy Stride.

Still wouldn't work unless there's some clothing that does this specifically, as you're imitating a person in camouflage clothing, and if there IS clothing that grants a bonus to stealthy stride, point me in that direction asap!

I think rules do cover camouflaged.

ED3 - Gamemaster's Guide p.91 Perception modifier table: Target camouflaged, same color as surroundings +3 difficulty
It is not a direct bonus to Stealthy Stride, but a modifier upon the result. Based on RAW it would be additive to any other magic you would use to hide.
As disguised self can create the illusion of body paint and any clothes you desire, obtaining the make-up and dress for the occasion (terrain) is simple as that.

I have checked every available spell and talents for the Illusionist disciple and there isn't any other way to obtain this than Disguise Self.
Reading through the Disguise skill's description, it is possible to get this effect, as it is done in IRL.
Disguise Self as magical talent would definitely capable to produce the same effect. Also, taking body paint as artistic skill would definitely harmonize with the concept.
