Those 'staff masters' (they actually prefer the term 'stick') were introduced in the 'Makers of Legends' books from 2nd Edition. They were basically like 'extensions' to the Adept's Ways who brought some good (and some bad) concept ideas to the main Disciplines.

Alright, so there's no special synergy, it's just a Nethermancer with melee ability. I'm already playing that :)

But with that combo you can spend karma on melee talent and advance faster than with skills ;)

That would be true, except we get Legend points dedicated to skills, because everyone was tired of never having any skills because it never made sense to buy them, when you could just amass more power with talents, which meant that characters would become absurdly narrow power houses :)

10% of the Legend points we get, must be spent on skills.
