Word is that the Captain has two options; return to the K’tenshin with empty pockets and face the village families without the crewman entrusted to her OR she needs a big enough score that all will be forgiven. The annual renewal of the t’slahyin is coming up and the amoral Captain is running out of time.
The petty slaving operations grabbing villagers along the river won’t give Captain Gerri the payoff she needs, even with her Theran contacts paying top price. The Captain needs something bigger. Much bigger. And she needs a crack (and disposable) crew to make it happen…
House V’strimmon has contacts in seedy riverfront bars all up and down the Coil River. They are buzzing about what Captain Gerri is up to. They say the Soaring Espagra is going after something that might get Captain Gerri her biggest Theran payday of all… …something ancient the Empire has been looking for… …and that the Captain is desperate enough to risk her ship and remaining crew to go after.
Jaclaeril is afraid the Soaring Espagra is about to stir up something that everyone on the river would prefer remained asleep…
