Summary:
Intrepid band of adepts leads Frug Timbers to the Iceclaw Moot where he will stay to help rebuild the bridge which has begun to crumble. They were also able to initiate a truce between the Chakta birds and the trolls, who to date had an attack on sight policy with the help of the wife of the tribes chief, Seshia and his daughter Zoya. They also put a stop to the catastrophic arrival of a handful of piranha cattle, aka Genhis, with only one life being lost. Poor Zulyafi, the primary herd shepherd, lost his life to the ferocious little beasts but the tribe seemed to view it as a fitting punishment for such a back investment as pregnant Genhis. On their way home, they encountered four great bear cubs but knowing that sometimes retreat is the better part of valour, they left the cubs be and cut a wide berth around them on the remainder of the trip home.

You are reading the writings of Truck of the deep Servos, windling warrior of the third circle.

Several of us answered an advert for Adepts needed to escort a mason named Frug Timbers to Iceclaw moot, the mason had been hired to repair a bridge. We escorted him to the moot without incident. The bridge in question was just outside the moot. The bridge was in very poor shape, and we felt it wise to only cross at a time, and to unladen Frug's horse before leading it across. We noticed a small flock of birds nested in a tree, and somebody identified them as Chakta Birds, which react very well to politeness and respect. We spoke with them and they were very pleasant. Apparently the trolls  have been feuding with the Chakta birds.

We entered the moot and spoke with  Creb the leader and his mate Sashia and their child Zoya. Apparently the women and children of the village have not had any problems with the Chakta birds, just the men. We informed the children that the young children that the Chakta birds could speak to them (telepathically), and they agreed to befriend the birds. I noticed that the birds had several gems, which I felt was unusual and interesting.

We spent a day or two getting Frug setup, assuring that the moot was going to be able to supply everything he needed (there was a good supply of stone nearby). In the middle of the 2nd night, we heard a commotion, Several of the Genhis the moot had recently acquired as herdbeasts gave birth. Baby Genhis are very ravenous and dangerous, unfortunately the moot had been keeping the genhis indoors at night. I led one of the baby genhis out of the village and the others knocked unconscious 3 of the remaining 4 (the other was killed). The moot only had one member killed, it was Zolyaki who had bought the genhis some weeks previously, and the moot did not seem to consider his loss a great tragedy.. The Moot considered immediately harvesting all the Genhis the very next day, but I argued that Genhis herding was very fine, you just had to be very, very careful about it. Rule number one is don't keep the Genhis inside your own house. Rule number two, manage the births carefully. Rule number three, drive the young far away, Rule four, collect the young once they grow enough to be placide. When we left to return to Throal they were still considering if the Moot really wanted to try to herd Genhis.

On the way back to Throal we saw some magnificent Great Bear cubs.

Orlam Rolfsom, Journal Entry # 5: Bridging the Gap

While wandering through the market, I noticed a small crowd around the job board, with a couple of faces I recognized. Sensing an opportunity, I made my way over and was pleased to discover that someone was looking for Adepts to assist them, and better still the person was a mason, not a farmer.
The group of us agreed to go together and find out what our potential employer, one Frug Timbers, had need of. It seems that a bridge between Throal and the Iceclaw Moot was in severe disrepair, and it also seems that the disagreement between the road building crews and the Throalic military must still be ongoing, because I suspect they'd normally be on hand for this sort of thing.

Well, that's good news for us anyways, I guess, since it means work. Taras would be scouting for us, as he usually does, with Strata once again joining to crush anything that got in the way. Also joining would be Dale, an Illusionist I had helped to learn some of the ways of Elementalism some time back, and Truck, a Windling Warrior who I had never met before.

We headed out from Throal after collecting some warmer clothing, considering that we were heading up into the mountains, and made good time to the Moot with no interruptions of any great significance until we came to what we suspected to be the bridge in question; an old stone arch crossing a relatively small but swift stream full of jagged rocks. There we met a flock of chakta birds that had nested in a nearby tree.

Chakta birds are pleasant enough, provided you're polite to them it seems, and after a few exchanges of pleasantries and gifts we learned that the local moot was not inclined to be very polite. As our employer wold be needing to spend a considerably time on the bridge, working, and we didn't want him to be harrassed constantly, Strata gave him some quick pointers on chakta bird etiquette and we moved on towards the moot thinking that perhaps in addition to escorting our charge we might also end the feud between the birds and the Trolls, which was certainly not helping anyone.

We met the local chief, a large sturdy fellow by the name of Kreb who seemed disinclined to try making peace with the birds, and his mate, an equally sturdy Troll by the name of Seshia who thought it made a lot of sense, probably because starting a war with birds is silly and pointless. Their daughter, Zoya, had been exchanging gifts with the birds and had a most marvellous collection of nice-looking rocks (including a few gems), for which she had traded threads that were coming loose from their clothing anyways. There is some speculation that the chakta birds probably know of some place where those treasures can be found, as Strata had received one earlier in exchange for a shiny length of chain, but we didn't really pursue it at this time. Still, it does suggest that there is a place full of treasure up in that part of the mountains somewhere. Maybe something to look into.

Anyways, the next day we introduced Zoya to the birds, which she had not known could talk, and before long all her friends were excited to talk to the birds as well, which I think did a lot of the work of encouraging peace between the two groups. The chakta birds would be able to keep an eye out on the surrounding area, the trolls wouldn't be harrassed every time they went to the bridge any more, and Kreb would have to swallow his pride and accept the birds as allies, or declare war against his daughters' new friends who were suddenly being very helpful.

We figured everything was looking good (Seshia was doing a lot of work behind the scenes to encourage Kreb to accept the birds as allies, I'm sure), when one night while camping out near the town gate (Frug's little hut was very little; I imagine Truck could have shared with him, but the rest of us made good use of Elementalism) when Taras heard the most awful racket during his watch. He woke us up, and it sounded like the local cattle were in great distress.

Now, I should like to point out that I had earlier heard the townsfolk mention that they had a herd of "genhis", which I had not previously encountered or heard of, and assumed that the rest of the group had been paying attention as well, although I didn't really go to any great lengths to be certain because it didn't seem significant to me. Well, apparently we have a few people in the group who knew what those are, and just didn't bother bringing the subject up at any point in time. Also, it was very significant.

Genhis, it seems, have an odd life cycle where the mothers give birth to to a murderous pile of teeth and jaws that eat everything in sight, giving the mothers barely enough time to move away before they start eating everything in sight. Now, you'd think that knowing about this, people would have asked the villagers what precautions they take when they bring said genhis into their houses, and it seems that the answer, had we asked, would have been that they do nothing.

As you might imagine, that could have ended very badly. Fortunately for them, we were awake and ready by the time the babies begin to start eating everything, and as a result the only Troll that was eaten was the one that had bought the herd in the first place (who probably had the most in his house out of anyone, I suspect). We knocked out 3 of them, one of them Truck led into the stream nearby (where it was probably battered to death on the rocks), and one of them took an ethereal bolt to the brain and was quite thoroughly dead (and I had almost brought it low with my ice mace and chain by that point, too).

Anyways, it seems the townsfolk were unsure whether they would want to continue to keep genhis (finally, some *sensible* farmers), or at the very least thought that they would need to take some very extensive precautions regarding them, but as we weren't needed for a while we headed back to Throal while Frug worked on the bridge (and, I suspect, also worked on repairing some of the houses that Strata walked through to get to the genhis babies faster).

The return trip was only slightly more eventful than the trip there had been; we had the good fortune to spot a group of very large bears before we crossed their path, kept our distance, and did not get ripped apart by them or their angry mother who was even larger that we spotted a bit later. So that's something to definitely watch out for in that neck of the woods.

<Throalic year equivalent to Nov 14, 2020>

The cat said all was going well and wished some privacy. Went for a walk. Found I was walking with some adepts I knew. Said hello. They said they were guarding a dwarf who works with stone. Said OK.

We got to a bridge. There were some birds. Said hello.

We went to a troll moot. There were trolls. Said hello.

One night some cows started screaming and gave birth to teeth that tried to eat the trolls and the dwarf. Punched them.

Went for another walk back to Throal. There were bears. We walked around.
