The Granite Keep (45:11), sits in a narrow pass guarding access to North branch of the Alidar River Valley. Throal has recently re garrisoned the fortification and is in the process of repairing it. The Garrison runs frequent patrols to suppress bandits in the area and exert general civilized control of the area.

William and his legendary Huttawa Charlie are becoming well known around Throal. William is finally listening to the pattern within him and he is answering its call to seek out a Cavalryman and see if he is worthy to receive training in the Cavalryman discipline.

A Throalic government official has reached out to William and asked if he and some companions might be willing to travel to the granite Keep and solve a problem for them.

Reward: Opening of Cavalryman, or Training as Cavalryman. Training in Cavalry Skills. Perhaps some other things as well.

Alternate awards:
Opening of Cavalryman, or Training in Cavalryman, Warrior, or Swordmaster talents. Training in Martial Skills. Also discount blood charms (these are OK blood charms, not horror tainted at all, I promise).
Note: Earlier Discounted Blood Charms were offered for sale. If you have already declared you bought blood charm(s) this adventure, you found it is horror marked and must be discarded, however the correct shipment of blood charms was found, so are provided a good one.


Further Information:

A Bloodshaper has been encountered, it seems to have a predilection for turning name-givers into centaurs, and while its existing physical body was slain, the astral body got away. It is probably even now forging a new physical body to allow it to walk once more among an unsuspecting populous.

William takes the meeting with the senior officials. THey mention there is a possible horror infestation as one of the soldiers there has developed a cloven hoof instead of a foot. We are to also deliver supplies and a medium sized chest of something. Myself, Volkir, Jael and Dubhan will accompany William Carver on this mission. It takes us 2 days walking to reach the Granite Keep. We are stopped at the gate and asked our business. We explain we are delivering supplies. And here to help with the recent hardships. We are escorted to the commander's office.

The commander explains that little over a month ago they started seeing signs of horrors. He takes us to the field hospital to show us what he means. There are about 20 soldiers in there that have all been affected somehow. Ranging from goat hives, to tigers teeth, to soldiers combining with their mounts and becoming centaures. The rest of the soldiers are panicky. All the camp followers have already left. THey were on patrol to the east of here in the valley. Myself and Volkir try using Suppress Curse on a couple of the affected soldiers, to no avail. Dubhan looks in astral space and says it is open except for these soldiers are all tainted. We end up spending the night and have dinner with the officers. The supply officer makes a comment about getting all the requested blood charms instead of a fraction of what was requested. We are able to purchase blood charms at half price. Next morning we head out to the east following the standard patrol route. Looking for Horrors. We are marching through a small valley when we are ambushed by 5 Azijin. They seem to focus on my party and not the squad of soldiers, which is probably a good thing. The creatures have an ability that causes a static discharge when you attack them. We make quick work of the creatures after they are done ambushing us. After the battle, we are resting / recovering and one of the soldiers walks over and attacks William Carver. Jael is quick to subdue the man and Wailliam and Dubhan immediately look in the astral and see a creature there. As it sees William looking at it it flees the area quickly. As soon as the creature leaves the soldier is fine. We have a short discussion of how to track and kill the horror.

William does some communing with local Elementals / spirits asking for guidance to find the horror. We make our way along the rest of the patrol route with no incidents and head back to the keep. We are still trying to figure out what is going on, Dubhan looks in the astral again along with William. William sees that his blood charm that he bought here at the keep is actually tainted. It acts as a horror mark and is an avoid blow but can also be used as a deliver blow charm ! Lots of suppress curse trying to remove the 2 charms that have been implanted. We go into a room to have some privacy while doing this so we dont alarm the soldiers. Not sure if they are in on the use of the bad charms or not. We continue to follow William and his astral pursuit to track where the horror is. We track it to the field hospital, inside, along the eastern wall. We determine it is the Dr. We lure him outside and ambush him. The horror is put down quickly but not before he knocks Dubhan unconscious.

THe Dr was the horrors construct, the astral horror has fled the area. THe Dr had stolen the blood charms we brought from Throal and replaced some with his corrupted ones. We are able to identify all the tainted blood charms among the soldiers and remove them. Return to Throal...

From the Journal of Dubhan Goronich:

Once again, being there for my friends almost got me killed. This seems to be my lot in life. Perhaps I need to be more ambitious, so I can drag my friends into situations that might get them killed? I don't know.

So, William, who I have come to believe is the embodiment of the Journeyman Path, continues his quest to learn how to do everything. For quite a while now, William has been riding Charley the Huttawa on our adventures. He decided to quest for entry into the Cavalrymen Discipline and Jael, Xevious, Vlolkir & I agreed to help.

Naturally, with William, Horrors were involved. We were asked to deliver a shipment of Blood Magic Charms to an outpost, the Granite Keep. They had asked for help with a possible horror infestation.

Once there, we were accompanied by some legionnaires out to the area where some horrible mutations had occurred. All it accomplished was getting us ambushed by Azijin. Goldentone came in particularly useful in that encounter, as did Displace Self. Twice that spell got me out of the way of the beasts. I didn't actually have to fight anything. My extremely violent companions did all that.

After the fight, while we patched ourselves up, William was attacked by one of the Legionnaires. We discovered the astral form of a Horror was controlling him. Tracking the Horror down was extremely difficult.

We eventually ended up back at the Keep, where suspicion fell upon some of the Blood Magic Charms my companions had cheaply purchased from the Keep's command. I used Identify Magic to examine them, using Astral Sight and Astral Targeting to gain advantage. I quickly found that the Charms had an unusually high Mystic Defense. Identify Magic revealed the magic to be of Horror origin.

And so, I combined Wizard and Physician to suppress the curse of the items (William & Jael had implanted some of the Charms) and remove them. Then, we geared up for a fight (I didn't trust anyone in the Keep) and William used the Charms as a link to track the Horror to its physical form... the Keep's surgeon.

We prepped for a fight. I wove Threads to my Matrix for Rampage, and timed it so the "doctor" was emerging as I was ready to Cast. (Rampage is such a loud spell to cast, I didn't want to alert him ahead of time.) Unfortunately, the thing decided I was the primary threat. I was knocked unconscious, and nearly killed. Thankfully my colleagues were able to finish it without me.
