The Adventures of Django
October 29, 2018
Rumor: Carter Johannes believes he has been sleepwalking over the recent weeks. He is willing to pay a few Adepts to watch over him and prevent any misadventures.

Myself and a small party(Yotra, Bob, Haast, Stathin) head off to the farmers land to watch over him. (39.10). Upon leaving Thral, we ended up at Borgens Rest. Not the correct town :( After a short conversation with the others we head out again. We eventually find our way to Johansens farm.

Johansen is a tall dwarf with a long braided beard. We make introductions and are invited in.
It has been about a week that he has know one of his neighbors saw him out walking in the middle of the night. Then a neighbor said he was walking at night but he was with another person. After the story we all show our minds are free from horrors.

We search around the farm looking for anything unusual. While checking the barn, a goat comes in with a couple sores on its neck. I call the others of the party to look and see if that is normal. Check the other goats for puncture wounds. Ask Farmer Johansen about it. Check the farmer for puncture wounds also. Out of the 15 goats, 6 have the puncture wounds. All at the base of the neck. One injured goat has multiple injuries. Posible the injuries have been occuring of the span of about 3 weeks. None of us have ever seen bug bites like this.

After dinner he thanks us for the help with the goats. He asks us to keep an eye on him over night. Dont let him leave. If he does get up, find out what he is doing. We set up watchs, the first night in I thought I heard a bear scratching at the door. But there was no bear. THe rest of the night is uneventful. Farmer Johanson makes us breakfast the next morning. As we are finished eating I hear some commotion outside. The neighbor(Evan James) walks up and bangs on the door saying for Johanson to come out. He accuses Johanson of stealing his wife last night. After a short argument Evan leaves, saying his going to tell the council.

We decide to go check out Evans place, see if we can find some tracks. As we are walking along the road we are set upon by a pair of wolfs. The wolfs are quickly dispatched. We notice the wolfs have the same puncture wounds as the goats. Stathin notices much of the underbrush has been disturbed. Bob says it was a barefoot person along with a booted person. We follow the tracks to the west. We find a path and are following it, we come across 4 giant mosquitoes. The creatures move to attack us, after a short fight we fall all the miquetoes. After they have been killed they seem to dissolve.

We continue along the path and come to a cave entrance, we proceed into the cave. As we explore the cave a humanoid creature crawls across the roof of the cave and drops behind Bob and attacks. The creature looks like Farmer Johanson, sort of. It drives a proboscis into Bob’s shoulder and grapples. Bob flexes his muscles and tries to break free of the grapple. Bob is strong and breaks free. A ferocious fight ensues.

After the fight we proceed to explore the cave. We find a room at the end with a summoning circle etched into the floor. A couple book shelves with several books in them, and the unconscious form of a female dwarf(presumably Evans wife). Also among the books is a journal.None of us understand the language. We bind the wounds on the girl and gather up the books. Return to Farmer Evan his wife, he is very grateful. Speak to Farmer Johansson about what we found. Return to Thral, take the books to the great library. 800LP, 230 SP, 3 TIP

From the Journal of Haast, Novice Beastmaster

I can’t say why it happened. I can’t even say for certain exactly what happened. But I can say that there are terrible things lingering in this world, and that now, perhaps, there are fewer of them.

It began with a simple request. A farmer seen wandering in the middle of the night while he thought he was sleeping. On multiple occasions, his neighbors had seen him and asked him what he was doing, but he had no memory of it. He thought he was sleepwalking, but was concerned it might be more than just that. Especially after he was seen with someone else. We were supposed to watch over him and see what he did. Where he went. By light of day, he seemed normal enough, but something decidedly not normal was happening at the farm.

Having spent part of my youth working on a farm myself, I know a little of what normal looks like. This was not it. Many of his goats carried unusual wounds, as if large needles had been inserted into their flesh. The first thing I said was more or less “unless this area has mosquitoes the size of eagles, I can’t think of what might of caused this.” I would later come to regret that particular jest.

In the night, there was a minor disturbance outside, but the farmer never woke. He slept deeply until dawn, when a neighbor arrived, pounding on the door and demanding the return of his wife. It seems he had seen our ward come to his home and leave with the woman with his own two eyes. His daughter corroborated the tale. As I said: not normal. We calmed the neighbor somewhat, but he was set on getting the local authorities involved. It might have been better if they had done so a week earlier.

We decided that at least we had a starting point, now that we knew where this other person that looked like the farmer had been exactly. A short walk to the neighboring farm would lead us to the trail. But not before we were attacked by wolves. A pair of wolves that attacked in a desperate fury, with none of the usual teamwork, or trying to separate a weaker member from the group, or truly, any behavior at all I would have expected from wolves. Not normal. Afterwards, we found more injuries on the animals, the same as the goats had.

We stumbled upon the explanation not long after. They would have been large, even by eagle standards, these mosquitoes. But they also weren’t mosquitoes. Something about them was… wrong. Even aside from the size. And when they were killed, they dissolved into a thin mist and faded, leaving no trace behind. But that would not be the worst of it. No, the trail continued, and we followed it, determined to find the source of the problem, and perhaps to rescue the neighbor’s wife from whatever was happening.

I won’t describe the cave here. Or the ritual circle we found inside. That magic is beyond me, and far outside of my understanding. But the thing we found wearing the farmer’s clothes… from a distance, it had the shape of a man, though it clung to the ceiling of the cave like a fly. In the light, from up close, it was a thing of nightmares. Large, round eyes like an insect, and a needle-mouth it used to stab into the backs of my companion’s necks, as if to drain their blood and inject poison into their bodies at the same time.

We fought it, and killed it… I think. It faded into smoke as well. No, there is nothing to corroborate our tale except our own words, and the neighbor’s wife, who we found half-dead within the cave. I shudder to think what might have become of her had we not come when we did. How anyone mistook that thing for the farmer, I do not understand. Who it was seen with in the nights before we arrived, I do not know. Where it came from, or what it was doing, I cannot say. In truth, I fear that we came back with more questions than answers. But I leave you with this record of what happened. Perhaps one day, it will be useful.
