“I am always doing what I can’t do yet in order to learn how to do it.” - Anonymous Dutch painter

The artist is driven by curiosity and passion, bordering sometimes on obsession. Many pursue artistic interests, but the artist is concerned with the grand idea. He may believe that nearly any means justifies the end that he has dedicated his life to. Some big ideas might include Aesthetics (the experience of beauty is the meaning of life), Naturalist (learning about and documenting the natural world), Political (a movement or party), Humanitarianism (improving the human condition), Religious (advancing the interests of a particular religion), or Scientific (increasing the the sum of human knowledge). At any rate, the artist has a creative gift that he believes will change the world. A Journeyman Artist has a resource called Inspiration tied to their Profession Skill that they can use to advance his cause.

Inspiration: The artist’s dedicated focus on his craft in pursuit of his Great Idea bleeds over to his other successes. The Artist makes a Sustained test using his Profession Skill (6) taking one week. The artist can’t be involved in any other significant activities. The artist may create a finished work of art or just practice his craft. For each Success, the artist gets one Inspiration point. An artist may only have a number of Inspiration points equal to his Profession Skill rank. Inspiration may only be spent on tests that support the Artist’s Big Idea. The Artist must decide whether to use Inspiration before making the test, as how many points he is spending. If the Artist succeeds on the test, he gets a number of extra Success equal to the number of Inspiration points he spent. Extra Successes from Inspiration don’t stack with extra Successes earned from rolling well.

If you get extra successes on the Artist Test, what happens to them if you spend Inspiration points? Are they discarded?

Extra successes on an artist test to gain inspiration points translate to extra inspiration points on a one–to–one basis. Basically the artist can bank extra successes from his professional skill for other tests. Although they won’t make it more likely to succeed in the first place.

I’m still thinking about the skill list too. They’re social, but not social butterflies. Maybe taunt should be in there?

And at master level inspiration from artwork can benefit others.

Okay, so this Profession is starting to parallel a Questor of Astendar. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Taunt, Resist Taunt, Undermine, Cutting Words - artists can be seriously catty. You might look at the Aristocrat for some of the social Skills.
