At character creation, a magician gets a number of points equal to their Perception Step, which are used to buy spells. First Circle spells cost 1 point, Second Circle cost 2. (This is covered on page 68 of the ED4 Player's Guide: "Starting Spells".) Acquiring spells after that is up to the magician...

I would probably model it as a kind of hybrid group pattern/thread item. Whoever holds the title currently can weave threads as if to a group pattern, but with bonuses appropriate to the legends and tales associated with the title. Maybe you could allow people to pick extra talents from the options for the previous tier (so Novice can't, Journeyman gets to pick from Novice, and so on) This is already allowed. Most players won't, though, because the Journeyman options are (broadly speaking) more powerful/better than the Novice...

Yeah, having looked over this thread I think part of the issue is the small group and selected Disciplines. With only one physical combatant and two magicians, it's not surprising the Swordmaster goes down and you find yourself falling back into a more close-combat role (and taking abilities to help...
