I just went with the alternate advancement rules where you don't need to take the discipline talent and can advance on options instead.

I believe you can, you don't get it improve the free matrices though. You can also versatility in more matrices if you're playing a human, although they're more legend expensive than matrix items.

I've had one of my players complain that he feels like he's grossly underpowered in combats. Given that paths modify the followers karma ritual in specific ways, is there any indication of what happens to someone with more than one discipline. Do you merge the intent of both? Just do one? Ok, but then that makes all the living armours basically never made because it takes pushing a skill up and rolling that rather than your talent to make them. On the higher end, you can't weave threads to skills so the high armour items like crystal plate push into being impossible to make. How many...

There is also the advantage that weaponsmiths get, of having alchemy alongside every other crafting skill. They still need to find out design patterns though, but being the only people who can spend karma on all forms of alchemy makes them much better at making some in a gap between adventures. And ...

That's how I've been doing it, everything the party's got so far was a standard thread item other than a custom portable alchemy kit I recently introduced. I'm just keeping track of the key knowledge on a separate set of notes so they're all together.

That makes sense for bespoke or exceptionally rare patterns, and is discussed in the book itself, including using blood promises to secure training. The lack of large items to compare the handful of singularly expensive presented crafting items to makes it hard to work out how rare any of this stuff...
