... there is just one problem... multiple instances of the same spell on the same target create resonance in astral space. Resonance attracts attention...

So for each additional instance he needs 1 success more and failure triggers the same effect as raw magic.

Just spinning ideas. Have to try rule rule.

Lets allow things, but give them a good price...

* Unless otherwise noted -- it would be fair to rule that an ongoing area-effect damage (like, say Blizzard Sphere) doesn't stack with multiple uses.
Use with discretion. Void where prohibited by law or blood oath.

Does this also count for a group of 7 Elementarists all casting a fireball at mister bad guy in the same round? So only the highest damage is counted and the rest discarded?
I was going to say no, with Mind Daggers, Fireballs, etc. The damage duration is usually considered an instant effect, it is only the Partial Blindness and the Defense Penalties that have a multi-round duration, thus the damages stack, but the penalties do not.

But then I remembered that the rules list no "Instant" duration effects. Every spell says it lasts at least one round. Thus an argument could be made that since all spells last until at least the end of the round they were cast, and since spells don't stack, the rules as written could be interpreted that only the "biggest" instance of each spell can affect any one person. Only the biggest fireball and/or the most damaging Mind Dagger do damage, with the lessor successful castings of duplicate spells that strike the same target being discarded.

Bare in mind that I know of nobody who has ever even considered playing that way, but now that you point it out, the way it is written could support that interpretation. But I am pretty sure that most people play that damage stacks and it is only penalties and bonuses that don't stack.

The opposite is true: effects that do stack are listed in the description. Multiple instances of the same spell only used the "biggest" effect (absolute value). Stacking multiple Mind Daggers on the same target without changing the penalty effectively increases the duration; as one runs out, there is another penalty waiting.

I can see why there is this motivation for rule for penalty effects. But for damage, I would say every independent source counts.

Regarding the penalties one could argue with a group acting coherently being able to stack these effects. This would make it possible to unleash and control pretty big elementals with a group of 7th circle elementarists instead of requiring the 14th circle guy.
The scaling matters. Just adding successes together linearly makes it too easy for a large group of noobs to unleash a master elemental but using the fibronacci scaling just like with LPs and ranks I think it is viable.

so, biggest penalty would take priority until it runs out, then biggest remaining penalty until that runs out, etc, and if a new application has a higher penalty that would take over.

Therefore, unless I've missed something, I'd say that it would go this way:

Round 1: Effect: WIL+2/Mystic and a -2 penalty to Physical Defense"
Round 2: Effect: WIL+2/Mystic and a -4 penalty to Physical Defense"
Round 3: Effect: WIL+2/Mystic and a -4 penalty to Physical Defense"
Round 4 (do NOT cast): ''-2 penalty to Physical Defense"
etc

Duration: 2 rounds
Effect: WIL+2/Mystic and a -2 penalty to Physical Defense"

What happens when:
1. Wizard successfully cast this spell in one round; in the second round he casts it successfully again on the same target.
2. In the same round 2 wizards both successfully cast this spell on the same enemy.

And now --> how works the duration and penalty to physical defense in such case? Does it stack, etc.
